Diagnostic Test

Electromyography (EMG) Test for families from Nandyal

Assesses the health of muscles and the nerve cells that control them.

Why it is done

An Electromyography (EMG) measures muscle electrical activity during rest and contraction. By inserting a tiny needle electrode into the muscle, we can identify muscular dystrophy, motor neuron disease, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), and local muscle injuries. It is usually paired with a Nerve Conduction Study (NCS).

( Evaluation)

What does this test help evaluate?

Muscle weakness or floppiness (hypotonia) in babies

Difficulty standing, walking, or lifting arms

Suspected motor neuron disease or SMA

( Recommendation)

When is this test recommended?

This diagnostic test is not automatically required for every child. The decision to recommend the test is made by the pediatric neurologist after evaluating the child's detailed clinical history and symptoms.

( Process)

What happens during the test?

Tiny needle electrode inserted into muscle to record electrical signals.

1.Slight prick sensation when needle is inserted
2.Non-toxic, safe, and takes about 30 minutes

How to prepare your child

Ensure the hair is washed clean with soap; do not apply oil or gels.
Do not withhold regular prescribed medicines unless specifically instructed.
Ensure proper sleep if it's a sleep-deprived EEG protocol.
Dress the child in comfortable, loose clothing.
Experience
Will it hurt? No, tests like EEG are completely non-invasive and painless. NCS/EMG involve minor skin sensations but are safe.
Can parents stay?Yes, one parent is always allowed inside the diagnostic room to comfort and soothe the child.
Does it need sedation?Sedation is used only when a child is highly uncooperative or during extended sleep recordings, under doctor guidance.

How results are used

Diagnostic results are interpreted in correlation with clinical history, developmental timeline, and symptoms. A diagnostic report by itself does not confirm a complete care plan.

Why specialist interpretation matters

Interpretation by a DM-trained Pediatric Neurologist ensures subtle anomalies are identified accurately, preventing misdiagnosis of non-epileptic mimics.

Where is the test available?

The equipment is located in our Kurnool clinic. We coordinate schedules for families from Nandyal to complete tests and receive reports on the same day.

Test FAQs

Q. How much does an EMG cost, and when is it necessary?

EMG cost is structured transparently based on the clinical diagnosis requirements. It is essential when a child has muscle weakness or floppiness to distinguish between muscle disorders and nerve issues.
