Child Eye Blinking or Eye Rolling Episodes
Rapid repetitive eye blinking, upward eye rolling, or eye deviation episodes in children may indicate absence seizures or other neurological conditions.
“Repetitive eye blinking or upward eye rolling lasting a few seconds, especially with brief unresponsiveness, is a common presentation of absence (petit-mal) epilepsy in school-age children. It can easily be mistaken for a habit or an attention problem. If your child has multiple brief episodes per day where they blink rapidly or roll their eyes and then return to normal immediately, a Video EEG evaluation is recommended.”

Warning Signs to Watch
- •Brief staring with rapid eye blinking lasting 2–15 seconds
- •Multiple similar episodes occurring throughout the day
- •Child is unaware during the episode and cannot be interrupted
- •Resumes normal activity immediately after the episode ends

- •Hyperventilation provocation test during EEG (absence seizures are easily triggered by deep breathing)
