Child Head Banging
Repetitive head banging in toddlers is often self-soothing behaviour, but when persistent, intense, or associated with developmental concerns, neurological evaluation is needed.
“Many toddlers bang their heads rhythmically before sleep — this is usually a self-soothing behaviour and not harmful. However, when head banging is intense enough to cause injury, occurs many times during the day outside sleep context, or is associated with limited speech, poor eye contact, or social withdrawal, it may be related to autism spectrum disorder or another developmental condition.”
Warning Signs to Watch
- •Occurs many times per day, outside of sleep context
- •Intense enough to cause bruising, cuts, or scalp injuries
- •Associated with language delay, poor eye contact or social withdrawal
- •Cannot be distracted or interrupted during the behaviour
How We Evaluate
- •Developmental and autism screening assessment
- •Neurological assessment to rule out other causes
- •Assessment for pain sources such as ear or dental infection

Frequently Asked Questions
Is head banging always a sign of autism?
No. Many neurotypical children between 6–18 months bang their heads as self-soothing, especially before sleep. It becomes concerning when it continues past 2 years, causes injury, or is accompanied by speech delay and poor social engagement. An evaluation can distinguish between a benign habit and a developmental concern.
