Child Weakness on One Side of Body
One-sided arm or leg weakness, dragging one leg, or using only one hand preferentially before age 1 may indicate hemiplegia, cerebral palsy, or childhood stroke.
“One-sided weakness (hemiplegia) in children most commonly results from hemiplegic cerebral palsy due to brain injury before or during birth. However, children can also suffer strokes — and childhood stroke is more common than most parents realise. A child who suddenly develops weakness on one side, slurred speech, or facial drooping should be treated as a stroke emergency.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a child have a stroke, and how would you know?
Yes — childhood stroke is more common than most people think. Signs include sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, sudden trouble speaking or understanding speech, sudden severe headache, and loss of balance. If your child develops any of these suddenly, go to the nearest emergency department immediately. Time is critical — earlier treatment leads to better recovery.
