Child Poor Balance / Unsteady Walking
Frequent stumbling, wide-based gait, poor hand-eye coordination, or a new onset of unsteady walking in children may indicate cerebellar or neuromuscular disorders.
“Poor balance and coordination in children can result from cerebellar disorders (affecting the brain's balance centre), peripheral neuropathies (nerve disorders), or inner ear problems. New onset unsteady walking that appears suddenly — particularly after a viral illness — should be evaluated urgently as it may indicate acute cerebellar ataxia or encephalitis.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Is unsteady walking in toddlers always cause for concern?
Mild unsteadiness in toddlers first learning to walk is normal. However, if unsteadiness persists beyond 18–24 months, appears to be worsening, or appears suddenly in a child who was previously walking normally, it needs evaluation. New-onset ataxia after a viral illness should be seen urgently.
